2/11/2009 11:41:00 AM Stoughton Community Recreation Group seeks feedback on recreational activities for the disabled
People with disabilities in the Stoughton and Oregon areas won't have to travel to Madison for recreational opportunities, if the newly-formed Stoughton Community Recreation Group has anything to do with it.
On Tuesday. Feb. 17, from 6:30-8:30 p.m., the community is invited to attend a meeting at the Stoughton Area Senior Center that will solicit ideas and feedback on creating recreational opportunities for those with disabilities.
Last week, a group of 17 professionals and parents from the Stoughton and Oregon school districts, local churches, Stoughton Special Olympics, LOV-Dane, Karate America, the Dane County Timebank and Dane County YMCA met and shared ideas with Stoughton's Parks and recreation director, Tom Lynch, on ways to create special recreational opportunities for people with disabilities.
The meeting was the result of requests for more recreational oportunities made by members of Stoughton's Timebank and People First - a statewide self-advocacy progam for people with disabilities.
A representative from the Dane County YMCA shared her successes and failures with programs, planning and financial finding-efforts, and the use of fees and staffing for programs.
During last week's meeting, the group discussed mentoring, safety and adaptation, among other concerns.
The group also reviewed suggestions made by Lynch, addressed evening transportation concerns to and from events, and getting publicity for the Feb. 17 community meeting.
The group is looking to generate ideas about inclusive and seperate recreational opportunities in the area.
No registration is required; light refreshments will be served. For information contact Caroline Werner, coordinator, at 835-8971 or Tom Veek, advisor, People First Stoughton, at 669-6346.
